La Cabana Aruba - Earth Day Everyday
Aruba’s favorite timeshare resort takes environmental protection seriously, 365 days a year, observing sustainable practices every day.
The Engineering Team recently shared some of the steps taken by the resort to minimize its negative impact on the environment and to safeguard a healthy and safe environment for guests and employees.
The Housekeeping Department substituted dangerous cleaning chemicals for less harmful materials, and Engineering switched to low or zero volatile organic compound paints inside guest rooms. They have also methodically replaced all mercury light bulbs, the compact fluorescent ones, as well as the incandescent pool lights for LED bulbs and replace old ozone depletion refrigerant, by an improved high-efficiency green refrigerant. In a most innovative way, using no extra fuel source, the engineers exchange the heat from cooling equipment to produce hot water for guest rooms.
During the resort renovations, all guest bathrooms and kitchens were equipped with water aerators, in face basins, on showers heads and on kitchen faucets. Motion sensors were installed for light control in public guest-restrooms and in the associate locker rooms and toilets.
Having replaced all old guest room refrigerators, the new ones now boast high-efficiency status, with “Energy Star certified,” stickers, and the patio side doors and windows, are now made of double glazed glass designed to reduce heat radiation entering guest rooms.
In the Food & Beverage Department the green waste from the main kitchen is used by a farmer as pig feed, and kitchen oils are collected for the Bio Diesel production. A strictly adhered to quarterly service of the grease traps in the kitchen prevents excessive kitchen oil contamination at the neighboring Bubali treatment plant.

One of the resort’s focal areas, the gardens and the tropical landscaping, are regularly irrigated with gray water and treated with environmentally friendly pesticides & fertilizers. The green garden waste is recycled by Fantastic Gardens as compost to be bagged and reused in landscaping projects.
Chief Engineer Daniel Aguirre and the Environmental & Safety Manager Frank Sabajo report that solid waste handling is done by a professional company focusing on waste separation for recycling purpose.
Director of Human Resources Tessely Koolman adds that the resort constantly educates its team members in areas of personal & professional growth, on different important topics including green practices, health issues and safety challenges and conducts monthly internal audits by managers in order to maintain a premier tourist product.
The resort is currently affiliate with an internationally recognized green certification program “Earth Check,” and has been a Green Certified Platinum Earth Check Resort since 2000.
